I know this house, I met it when the owners, who had rented it to get through a financial pinch, put it on the market to sell... it's a place called hell.
I have always appreciated Carver's work, especially the dark story about the fishing trip and the one about the birthday cake and the boy who died.
Ninety percent of free verse is crud (Mine is good of course) but this one works. The phrasing and line lengths are spot on
